System Requirements & Compatibility

Last updated: April 2026

At a Glance

1. macOS Requirements

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later)

Intel Macs

Intel-based Macs are not supported. MessageHarvest ships as an Apple Silicon-only build.

Windows

A Windows version of MessageHarvest is coming soon. If you’d like to be notified when it becomes available, please join the waitlist on the landing page.

Download size: ~15 MB, minimal disk space for the app. Additional space is needed for the imported message database (varies by conversation volume).

2. Supported Backup Sources

Not supported

iCloud-only backups — backups stored exclusively in iCloud cannot be read because Apple does not store them as accessible files on your Mac. To use MessageHarvest, either back the iPhone up directly from inside the app over USB, or create a local backup via Finder or iTunes.

3. iOS Compatibility

MessageHarvest supports iPhone backups from devices running:

iOS Version Status
iOS 14 ✓ Fully supported
iOS 15 ✓ Fully supported
iOS 16 ✓ Fully supported
iOS 17 ✓ Fully supported
iOS 18 ✓ Fully supported
iOS 26 ✓ Fully supported

Apple's backup format has remained consistent across these iOS versions. If you encounter any issues with a newer iOS version, please contact support.

4. Permissions

Full Disk Access

macOS may require you to grant Full Disk Access to MessageHarvest. This is because iPhone backups are stored in a protected system directory (~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/). Without this permission, the app cannot read your backup files.

How to grant Full Disk Access:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
  2. Go to Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access
  3. Click the lock icon and authenticate
  4. Toggle MessageHarvest on (or click + and add it)
  5. Restart MessageHarvest if it was already running

MessageHarvest never modifies, moves, or deletes any backup data. By default it reads from the standard backup directory, but you can also point the app to a custom location if you have moved your backups elsewhere.

5. What MessageHarvest Does NOT Do

Important clarifications:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use MessageHarvest with iCloud backups?

No. iCloud backups are stored on Apple's servers in a proprietary format that is not accessible as local files. To use MessageHarvest, you need to create a local backup of your iPhone using Finder (macOS 10.15+) or iTunes. This local backup is stored on your Mac and can be read by MessageHarvest.

Q: Which iOS versions are supported?

MessageHarvest supports backups from iPhones running iOS 14 through iOS 26, including iOS 15, 16, 17, and 18. Apple's backup format has been consistent across these versions.

Q: Does MessageHarvest modify my iPhone backup?

No. MessageHarvest operates in a strictly read-only mode. It reads data from your backup files and imports the messages into its own encrypted internal database. The original backup is never altered, moved, or deleted.

Q: Why does MessageHarvest need Full Disk Access?

iPhone backups are stored in a macOS-protected directory. Full Disk Access allows MessageHarvest to read backup files from this location. The app only reads data — it never writes to or modifies the backup directory.

Q: Will MessageHarvest support future iOS versions?

Apple's iPhone backup format has been stable across iOS 14 through iOS 26. We test each major iOS release and publish updates if any adjustments are needed. However, we cannot guarantee compatibility with future iOS versions if Apple changes the structure of local backups. Check this page for the latest compatibility information.
